IOM and the Rights Based Approach

IOM takes a rights-based approached in project development and implementation, where a social-justice perspective ensures individual rights. The rights critical to IOM programming include the right of migrants, trafficked persons, migrant survivors of violence, sexual and reproductive health rights alongside the International Convention on the Elimination of all forms of discrimination against Women and the Convention on the Rights of the Child. IOM recognizes that empowering women and meeting people’s needs for education and health, including reproductive health, are necessary for both individual advancement and balanced development. Ensuring access to social services, advancing gender equality, and eliminating violence against women are essential to development and quality of life. IOM is committed to migrants and thier families and ensuring children have the right to survival, the right to develop to the fullest, the right to protection from harmful influences, abuse and exploitation, and the right to participate fully in family, cultural and social life.
